IN what I thought was just a brilliant statement reported in another negative WYD article yesterdays Sydney Morning Herald, the Deputy Lord Mayor of Sydney Tony Pooley was quoted as saying "I don't think we can pretend to be a global city unless we occasionally invite the bloody globe here". Now that is one of the funniest lines I have ever heard. If you have already looked at the link to the artcle you would have seen it is reporting on how Hyde Park , across from St
Mary's Cathedral, may have parts closed for months while the turf is revived after the trampling of 225000 pilgrims on top of it.

While the article is of course billed as a negative it is the mayor and deputy mayor who are quoted as saying all the inconvenience will be worth it. I can just imagine Deputy Lord Mayor Pooley sitting in a press conference and getting so frustrated with it all that he follows on from the Lord Mayor's reference to Sydney as a global city with his award winning statement. I don't know why they didn't turn it into the headline! So if you have a minute why don't you congratulate Deputy Lord Mayor Tony Pooley on his wit and wisdom, send the man an email! It's not often enough that we get statements of such support and humour from politicians. Good job Tony!
