Why Australia should be subsidising WYD

This event is worthy of government support for reasons unrelated to religion:

1.It will be the biggest event ever held in Australia in terms of participants. It will draw 125,000 international visitors – more visitors than the Olympics

2.These visitors are mostly young adults who will return to Australia if they enjoy their visit

3.The NSW Government has said it will inject $231 million into the Australia economy.

4.The major events will be broadcast live around the world – a chance to showcase Sydney and Australia to the world!

And some facts about the event:

1. The pilgrims themselves are paying for about half the cost of staging the event through their registration fees

2. The Church in Sydney (and in the preparatory events, the church throughout Australia) is making a very considerable contribution

3. Corporate partners are providing important services and cash

4. Federal and State Governments are also important partners and are contributing cash and services. But they have committed much more to smaller events in the past. For example, the Victorian government spent more than $600 million on the Commonwealth Games and the Federal Government spent nearly $300 million on top of that ($293 million)

So compared to other major events we are getting much better value per dollar spent...bargain!
